I got to sit down with Joe Hernandez-Kolski, Multifaceted actor/comedian/def poet and Emmy Award winner. Joe and I go way back, like Clinton White House back, yes we worked there back in the day and I have some great stories that I’ll print in another 20 years. We caught up as he was working on the promo for his new production, “awake,” which will premiere on July 29, 2011 at BootlegTheatre in Los Angeles and runs through August 20th. The show is the follow-up to Joe’s critically-acclaimed production, “You Wanna Piece of Me?

Joe has the ability to get all “deep” one second and have you laugh the next. I’ve heard a few of the pieces he was working on for this new show, from the reality of losing his mother, to that whole “flirting on Facebook” thing. We threw him our OurTiempo Hot Tamale Questions so you can all get a taste. Oh and here is great video of him live.

What historic figure do you admire the most?

Martin Luther X – King in the early part of his life, Malcolm in the later part of his life.  King was in unchartered waters and Malcolm really changed his views after he visited the Mecca.  It takes courage to do that.

Which living person do you admire the most?

Right now, Louis C.K.  He’s one of my favorite comedians right now.

Which characteristic of yours you like the least?

Okay, I know I can get this one right.  Is it…no, that’s not it.  Is it…no, that’ll just sound dumb.  C’mon, Joe, you can get this one right!  It’s….PASS.

What do you dislike most about others?

Entitlement

What is your greatest fear?

Getting in my own way

When do you lie?

When I can’t remember a person’s name and I try to play it off.  Although I’ve gotten better at re-introducing myself cuz I know they’re probably thinking, “Shoot, what’s this li’l Italian looking dude’s name again??”

Which living person do you dislike the most?

Seriously?  Kim Kardashian.  There’s so much wasted potential there!  Kim, please, for me, go to graduate school, stop botoxing and make something of your brain and your life.

What do you regret?

Should’ve Could’ve Would’ves are deadly.  The future is still unwritten.  Here’s a big one though – I wish I would’ve taken that trip to Mexico with my mom before she passed away.  I kept pushing it off, thinking we had plenty of time.  That’s when God messes with ya.

Who’s the great love of  your life?

Hmm…my mom and Tina Fey.  They’re both so damn adorable.

What’s your major success in life?

I was the “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” Air Guitar Champion for the Chicagoland area.  Seriously, define success.  I’ve been working as a performer full-time for almost ten years now.  That’s incredible.  I’ve performed in some great productions all over the US and the UK.  There’s still a lot that I want to achieve.  I see myself on a treadmill and I keep pushing the incline button.  Sure, it’s gonna get tougher and tougher as I go higher but my butt is gonna look great!

Where would your rather live, near the sea or on a hill?

The sea

What’s your favorite name?

Xochi.  That’s what I wanna name my first daughter (I know I’m gonna have daughters.  It’s God’s way of getting back at me.)

Who would play you in a bio?

Pre-HGH Sylvester Stallone

What book are you reading right now?

Y The Last Man

By Brian K. Vaughan

It’s a great graphic novel series about all of the men of the world dying from one huge epidemic.  I found the entire series at my local public library.  I was like a kid in a candy store.  We need to give more money to our public libraries.  They shouldn’t have such awful random hours!

Which is your favorite movie?

“Searching for Bobby Fischer” inspires the crap out of me.  “Breakfast Club” cuz I can recite it word for word.  “Run Lola Run,” “Blade Runner” and finally “Casablanca.” Oh, and…“Usual Suspects,” “Planet B-Boy,” “Anvil: The Story of Anvil,” “Shaun of the Dead,” “Malcolm X,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “The Dark Knight,” and Todd Solondz’s “Happiness.”  Okay, I think that covers a few of them.

How would you like to die?

Late in life.

If you could  have dinner with 3 people already deceased, who would they be?

George Carlin, Lucille Ball and my mom.

Today I want to…

Write the real.
